A Testimony from our 13 year Veteran, Dan Sheehan, on the Career of a Lifetime

“A career with the Knights of Columbus, is it for me?
This is the question I faced 13 years ago. I had worked all my life in the corporate world, was familiar to a set schedule and a weekly paycheck. All was good. I had always toyed with the idea of running my own business and that really appealed to me. After a great deal of research and studying different ideas, I found that the startup cost would be prohibitive. I was a member of my local Knights of Columbus council and seen the Insurance Agent attend our meetings. It also struck me funny that each year, it seemed, we always needed members moving from the associate members status to Insurance member status to qualify for our star council award and would often fall short. I started to research on what it took to be a Knights of Columbus Field agent. It sounded and looked like running my own business would be a significantly less startup cost. But I had zero experience in sales and never worked in a commissioned base world. I was set with my current position. I had a good salary, good health insurance, a 401K saving plan and the list goes on and on. But then I started to see in corporate America that companies were downsizing. They were also moving younger employees with lower salaries into positions that were held by long term employees with higher salaries. Thinking that it would not happen to me, I went on. When you are living the so-called “good life” your faith foundation can lose its grip. When you have family members deployed in the war, your mind can be somewhere else. When the worlds pleasures and temptations are all around, Satan is at his best. Then mistakes happen, poor decisions, anger from a project date missed, all can lead to the fault of downsizing, fired, replaced or whatever the term of the day will be. So, I did a little more research into the position with the Knights of Columbus. Where can you go to live your faith with other people who share the same values as me, while make a living at the same time. Still, it scared me to death to take the leap. Then it happened. The downsizing. So, I picked up the phone and called a gentleman named Jeff Niemeyer, a General Agent with the Knights of Columbus. Not knowing the process, I was interviewed, my wife was interviewed, and took a personality test. After the testing period, I was given a go to start studying for my state licensing test. I passed the state test and started my career with the Knights! This may sound like a long road, but it was the best decision I had made in my life concerning a career. You have a protected territory; you will receive training and help from the other men who work for your agency. While we all have an extremely competitive nature, everyone is willing to help each other. So, with no experience I learned all I could, listened, and used my ideas of running my own business to formulate a plan to be OK. I did not inspire to be good or great, I inspired to survive. In all the research I did, a business needs to survive the first 3 to 5 years to be successful. With the grace of God and the support of my family, I had a support system that could not fail. I sometimes ask myself why, why didn’t I do this years ago? No one in the State of Illinois had ever qualified for the MDRT organization from the Knights of Columbus. My first full year, a gentleman from the Bloomington area and I did. Since then, I have qualified over ten times and have obtained lifetime membership of this prestigious organization that represents all financial professionals in the world. Approximately 2% of these financial professionals worldwide will qualify for MDRT. The Knights of Columbus offer incentive trips and the Supreme Knights Club within the Knights of Columbus field force. I have qualified for nine incentive trips, and I have obtained 4 Supreme Knight Club’s awards. After looking back on all these accomplishments, the most impressive for me is that I have impacted over 1,500 families with the protection and financial security that they needed. With those 1,500 plus policies those families and communities will see a fiscal impact of over one hundred million dollars. Then to break it down a bit further, my most satisfying plans are the one that the families were on a tight budget but needed protection, and we helped them budget and get a basic plan in place to build upon in the future. This is not a job. It is a calling. And if you take care of your families you serve, they will take care of you. I quit working when I started my career with the Knights of Columbus. It is a privilege to get up and serve my families and communities. Are you ready to quit working and start serving while making a professional income? Do you want to be in a place where you can blend your faith with fellow colleagues and the families, you serve? If you want to balance your life with faith, family, and friends then the opportunity that awaits you with the Knights of Columbus is for you. What are you waiting for???”
